Writing Interests

Someone to give constructive but honest feedback on my writing. I lack a bit of confidence in my writing but I would really like to hone my craft.

I write mainly short stories and the occasional poem. They are mostly YA/Adult but I am trying to develop my writing in MG style. I read a lot of MG/YA and would like to write a novel for this age range eventually. I particularly love short stories because good ones are so well crafted and every word is doing something to move the story forward.

Erotic fiction. Non Fiction.

So many! I love to read. In adult fiction my favourite books that I return to like a comfort blanket are things like Dune by Frank Herbert or The Lord of the Rings. I'm a big fan of Neal Ashers Sci Fi novels and Ben Aaronovich Fantasy/Crime novels (Rivers of London series). I also love China Meiville's writing, which borders fantasy and weird fiction mostly. In children's fiction I love a diverse range of things from Hilary McKay's writing (especially the Skylarks' War) to Sophie Anderson's modern take on fairytales and folk tales in books like The House with Chicken Legs.

I have always wanted to be a writer but never really had the confidence or the discipline to do anything about it. Life sort of got in the way in my 20's and I got married, started a family and career. At one point I was actually a head teacher of a school (although I hated the job and it was a miserable, stress filled 3 years). Now I am at a point in my life where my children are almost grown up, and generally a lot more independent, and my work/life balance is at a level I am happier with, and I have some time to pursue my own interests a bit more. I have started a blog for reviews of children's fiction and I have become a children's literature influencer (accidentally!) on Twitter. I also love nature and sport and the quirky community of the east coast of England.
